I am sorry to tell you that it is right what the A-kasser told you. The requirements are very clear and it is not possible to be exempted from the requirements.
Only for graduates there is special rules - they dont need to have been member/worked before getting unemployment benefits.
If you work as phD it will sometime (depending on salary) be possible to use graduate rules, but I assume its not your case.

Thank you for your quick response. Funnily enough I am a PhD graduate from the UK, so my previous employment within the UK was as a PhD immediately proceeding my job here.

to be eligible for unemployment benefits in Denmark, you must have completed the PhD program in Denmark and it must have had a minimum duration of 18 months.
Although it is possible to follow some of study abroad but one of the requiremets for using graduates rule is that you must had a permanent address in Denmark no later than one day before the start of your education. As I understand your comment you have followed and completed your PhD in UK and is now working on normal conditions in Denmark.
So you can not use graduates rule - you can only the normal rules for earners.
(= 1 year of membership/work).

I am sorry I just submitted a similar question. I also hapen to have completed my PhD abroad.

Looking at this sentence from your webpage (under Benefits):

"To be entitled to unemployment benefits when you become unemployed, you must have had at least 52 weeks (1.924 hours) of work within the last three years and been a member of an unemployment insurance fund for at least one year."

I thought that the 1924 hours could have been completed in the last three years right? I guess it is a matter then of modifying this sentence so that it includes the restriction of "1 year of membership AND work" that you talk about...
