Hello,
so I am about to graduate on August 2024. I started working on December 2023. By the end of graduating, I will have only worked 8 out of the 12 months that are mandatory in order to receive the unempolyment benefits. I have a question regarding one rule that states :
“A person who does not meet the language requirement, is still entitled to unemployment benefits if the person instead meets an affiliation requirement. The affiliation requirement says that during 12 months within a 24 month period prior to the unemployment there must have been reported at least 600 wage hours to the income register (TAX)”.
My question is, can I work after my graduation for another 4 months ( part-time or full-time) in Denmark to cover the 12 months and the 600 hour-rule and then apply for the benefits?
And as a follow-up question do you know if for example I could work the 3 out of the 4 months in another EU country and then come back again and find a job (for a month) in order to fullfill the rule that says ” the last working hour should be within Denmark”.
Thanks

the affiliation requirement has to be fullfilled only on the date where you actually apply for unemployment benefits, hence from the day when you register as unemployed on Jobnet.dk
However its important that you at latest 2 weeks after you graduate get your status as newly graduate registered in the A-kasse.
If you have been study-member in the A-kasse you must change status from student to graduate.
About your second question:
When some of the work is carried out in another EU country, there are two requirements you must be aware of:
At least 150 out of the 600 hours has to be completed in Denmark, and also the last hour of paid work has to be in Denmark. So, yes it would be fine as you describe to come back and work for one month in Denmark, before you register as unemployed.
Some A-kasser write on their website that 150 hours have to be carried out in Denmark after returning to Denmark. Others say like us, thats its enough that the last hour is carried out in Denmark. Therefor we strongly advise you to get this confirmed by your own A-kasse.
As we describe in this article https://www.a-kasser.dk/changes-in-unemployment-benefits-for-graduates-from-may-2023/ an option for you – when you have work after graduation – would be to consider using the “aggregation rule” (combine education with income from work).
Using the aggregation rule gives you some advantages compared to using the “normal” graduate rule:
1. You dont need to meet the language (or affiliation requirement).
2. your right to Unemployment benefits (“dagpenge”) is based on meeting the income-requirement (not based on the graduate rule). You will get dagpenge 2 years compared to 1 year with the graduate rule.
3. as you benefit rate (amount you get paid) is calculated on basis of income earned from work, there is a good chance that the amount will be higher compared to what is paid according the graduate rule.
Since June 7 2024 it has been a requirement that a person (graduate) decide at latest 2 weeks after graduation whether he/she want to have the unemployment benefits paid efter the graduate rule (and have the fixed graduate benefit amount), or want to have the benefits calculated after the normal income-requirement (hereunder the aggregation rule). This decision cannot be changed after the 2-week deadline.
We strongly recommend to (also) ask your A-kasse about the agggregation rule if you consider using this.
Let us know if you have further questions.
Best regards,
Anders Weber, A-kasser.dk
