Hello,
I have been working full-time and contributing to A-Kasse since 2021. I have also been enrolled in a Master course at a Danish University at the same time. I have now completed all exams and only missing the Master thesis to complete the course, which I was planning to undertake during the next Semester, starting September 2024.I have been made redundant, and my employment ends at the end of July 2024. I am intending to claim unemployment benefit through my A-Kasse from 1 August. Can you please explain whether I can continue my thesis work while claiming unemployment or whether I need to withdraw from the course if I intend to claim unemployment? I know that one cannot attend courses from University programs that are eligible for SU while claiming unemployment. The course I am enrolled in is a Master degree and technically eligile for SU, but I would be working on my thesis without attending any courses and still be available to work.

You cannot participate in a SU eligible full-time education (be registered as student) and at the same time receive Unemployment benefits (“dagpenge”).
This is due to the fact that a person who receives unemployment benefits (“dagpenge”) must be fully available for the labor market.If a member studies without being registered at an educational institution, e.g. by writing a thesis, the A-kasse must carry out a specific availability assessment.
But since you have been able to work full-time during your Master Study until now, I believe the A-kasse need to accept that you can be available for the labor market while doing your Master thesis.I dont know if it is possible, but if you have an option to be registered for the final exam (Master thesis defense) as a so-called “private person”, i.e. without having participated in the previous education, it could help your chances to get Unemployment benefits. In that case the member is considered to be participating in education from the time the member has registered for the exam.
We strongly recommend you to talk with your A-kasse about your options.
