Hi,
I have a question regarding A-kasse, graduation and continuation of studies afterwards.
I’m about to graduate and finish my Bachelor’s degree in February 2023. Based on the guide on this website, I should already apply for A-kasse as a new graduate. But the problem is that I would like to continue my studies on a Master’s degree, which unfortunately doesn’t start earlier than August/September 2023.
So my question is: Should I apply for A-kasse as a graduate and then switch to student (if that’s possible?) when I start my Master’s degree? Or should I keep it as graduate throughout my whole Master’s degree?
Thank you very much for the help!
Have a great day.Natalie

we always recommend to apply for A-kasse membership as graduate (after bachelor). When you have your status registered as graduate (“dimittend”) you will have up to two years to start with receiving Unemployment benefits (“dagpenge”).
Can you get dagpenge in the period between February 2023 and August/september 2023?
Nomally a master degree starts right after the summer holiday. In that case you can not get dagpenge.
But in your case its not only the normal summer-break.I think you will be able to get dagpenge, but off course only if you are willing to be available for the labor market – this means you have to apply for jobs, and accept to have meetings with the Jobcenter and A-kasse. You can also not have SU in the same period.
In the period you also have to pay the normal member fee to the A-kasse.
If you are not already student member and has been that for at least 1 year when you finish bachelor, you must accept a “waiting-period” with dagpenge for 1 month.
When you have to start your master you must change status to student again. In this way you can get free membership.
As mentioned earlier – if you should decide to stop the master before its finished, you can get dagpenge based on your registered graduate rights. However you will not have the full 2 year period with dagpenge. The months you already have used will be dedusted in the maximum 2-year period.
If you finish you master you can register again as graduate based on your master degree. And get a new 2-year period with dagpenge.
I will recommend you to get this information confirmed by your A-kasse. If your are not already member you can sign up now as student and ask them about your rights as graduate.
Best regards,
