Hi,
I am a Swedish Citizen who moved to Denmark (Copenhagen) recently but still working in Sweden (Malmo). I have been working in Sweden and a member of the Swedish Unemployment Fund for many years. I was told I need to remain a Swedish Unemployment Fund member in Sweden until I am just (or mostly) working in Sweden but I think in case I will be unemployed I think need to become a member with an unemployment fund (within 8 weeks of unemployment from Sweden and provide PD U1 document). I want to know that in that case will I be eligible for unemployment benefits right away from Denmark (according to Danisah Calculation but I never worked in Denmark and was never a member of the unemployment fund in Denmark) or if this will apply (if you have not been a member of a danish A-kasse within the last 5 years – within the 8 weeks you must begin work in Denmark and work for at least 296 hours over 12 weeks / 3 months).

you are considered as a cross-border commuter. In this case there are special EU-rules regarding unemployment Insurance and Unemployment benefits.
You have to stay as member in the swedish Unemployment Fund (“A-kassa”) until you begin to work in Denmark.
When/if you find a job in Denmark you must become member in a danish A-kasse (and cancel your membership in the swedish A-kassa).
There is a 8-week deadline, which says that you have to become member in a danish A-kasse at latest 8 weeks after you have stopped in the swedish A-kasse. However we recommend to join a danish A-kasse as soon as you start working here.
If you become temporarily or partially unemployed in Sweden, you must apply for unemployment benefits in Sweden.
If you become unemployed full-time as a cross-border worker, you will change to the Danish system for unemployment insurance, which means that you must register with a Danish A-kasse and cancel insurance in Sweden.
As a cross-border commuter you do NOT need to meet the normal requirement for being able to transfer acquired rights from the swedish A-kassa (working period and insurance period). This means that even though you have not been member of a danish A-kasse within the last 5 years, your work and insurance period from Sweden will be transfered to the danish A-kasse.
If you want to remain covered by swedish social security (and Unemployment Insurance) you may have this option if you work 25-50% of your working time (for the swedish employer) in Denmark. It can be home work. This option is according to the so called “Øresundsaftale”.
Best regards,
